Do City fans want Santa Cruz? *video*

It is being reported that we have agreed a fee with Blackburn Rovers for Paraguayan centre forward Roque Santa Cruz.

I have to say I am not that excited about the possibility of this signing, he is a decent player and I am not writing him off because he might be successful were he to sign, but at the price quoted '18 million' there is better players out there.

You would think that at 6 ft 2+12 and along with the fact that he is very good at holding the ball up he would be perfect for us, we were crying out for a striker in that mould last season but I have just never been won over by Santa Cruz. I am probably being harsh on him but I just don't think he is a top class player, what I definitely do know is that his price tag is way to much.

I have heard lots of City fans say they want him and lots say they wouldn't want him so what I want to know is, would Santa Cruz be a welcome addition to our team?

In case you haven't seen a lot of him or if you want to refresh your memory before deciding if you would want him I have added this video of him. P.S. look away around 1:24!

  1. i think RSC will be a better signing than we might all think. Good in the air, tall, physical enough and MH knows how to get the best of him. He'll be happy at city and will hopefully channel that into good form, and if he was injured, he'd never pass a medica... plus if he fails, not like we need to $$$ and he'll be hopefully fighting for a place anyway, so if he fails, can be replaced

  2. I agree he has all those attributes that you listed and we need a player like that but like I said I have not been won over by him, yet!

  3. Couldn't agree more. What a bunch of ungrateful whingers some of our so called fans are. You'd have given your right arm to have RSC 2-3 years ago. We have won the lottery with ADUG and suddenly he's not good enough.
He will be a success so give him a chance

Same. I like him but I do fear that his injury will cause us problems. And lets be honest, Bellamy isn't the tallest player in the world is he? I think we should be going for other strikers abroad because I don't see EPL strikers that are "top class" coming to city and settling in well with the squad. Also, if RSQ does sign, where does that leave Tevez (if we sign him) and Bellamy? I will think MH will playy a 4-3-3 Zabaleta/Richards at right back Dunne/Kompany/Onuoha at CB and Bridge on the left and then we have Nigel de Jong in a holding role with Barry on the left and Ireland on the right and then forward we have Robinho/Petrov on the left and Bellamy/Caicedo/RSQ middle and on the right wing SWP/Tevez? I know there aren't many fans of Caicedo but I really think we have a good player on our hands if MH can get the best out of him. I suggest we loan him out like Jo.

  5. I can see the logic in signing a player with his quality and attributes for 10 or 12million but for 18! Surely this money can be better used elsewhere. Shouldn't Hughes be focusing his attention on Tevez and Eto or players of that standard to take us up to the next level. What message is it sending to them. I don't know about anyone else but don't you get frustrated when we're going back time and again for old favourites of Hughes that may have done well in mid premiership teams but surely we have to be aiming higher now?

  6. Actually to the anon comment that said 'You'd have given your right arm to have RSC 2-3 years ago' your wrong! If I am not sure someone I am not sure on them, that is suggesting that 2 or 3 years ago we would have been happy settling for second best, I have always wanted good players and that has not changed.

  7. The itch with RSG is an £18 million price tag for a sick note and Fat Shifty Sam taking Hughes and us to the cleaners for an over priced player.
Wretched value for money and a bad deal which ever way you look at it.
Thats the rub , Hughes has a blind spot on this player and Fat Sam has taken Hughes and us to the cleaners .
Dont give me that tosh that Hughes knows a good player.
Ben Haim anybody ? Another Hughes idiot buy but not at £18 bloody million.
Wayne Bridge has not set the world alight either so maybe he is balencing good buy's with bad or just pulls names out of a hat.
The last time I as this annoyed about good money for a bad player was Steve Daley but at least Malcolm had trophies in his CV.

  8. In defence of Hughes he has made some good signings too.

  9. This lad ended the rags clean sheets record and still scored a few in an injury-ravaged season, after a cracking season the year before. No mugs play for Bayern either, so chins up fellas. I like him and believe he'll do well. Let's see.

  10. Yeah true, I am not slating him it may seem that way, just not convinced and the amount doesn't help that either.

  12. Marika,
Dont worry son, we can buy badly and the money does not matter, Our pockets are very very deep.
The owners want 6 new players this transfer window, the Tevez deal will happen it was agreed weeks ago.
RSG at £18 million is small change to us not important. The annoyance is that he is over priced and £10 milion is a realistic value.
Well done for your contribution and keep the faith !
Life as a City fan is going to be wonderfull in the years ahead enjoy it !

  13. I would happily have paid the same £3.5m Rovers gave Bayern for him as he represented reasonable value at that point. However, everbody and his dog seems to have got way ahead of themselves after RSC had completed his first ever decent seasonal goal tally. To that end City and any other potential buyer are being shafted if it costs more than £8m for a guy without a truegoalscorers pedigree so you would have to hope that he contributes 10 to 15 assists a year too!
I'd go along with the views offered by Gary in relation to the merits of RSC and what he could do for City. However, I'll be very disappointed if this means we don't get either or indeed both of Tevez and Eto'o because these two fellas really are top drawer.

  14. The £18 million figure is misleading. More reliable reporting puts it at £15m with the balance being performance and achievement based. Still big money but ADUG are spending their money not yours. If MH thinks he is right for us you have to support his judgement. The medical is the key fator. The fact City have got rid of their previous Doc recently probably says all you need to know.

  15. Marika,I agree with what you say and you name some good players that we could purchase. By the way its cool that your from Tunisia, I hope your trying to convert some other Tunisians into City fans!

Ambient, your probably right it may be more like 15 million which I think is still too much!

I am not sure I like this who cares about the price attitude, getting ripped off is getting ripped off regardless of how much money you have. We don't want to be a laughing stock which is what will happen if pay over the odds for average players who don't justify their price tags.

  16. RsC record is

38 goals from 188 app for Bayen Munich

    07/08 - 23 goals for Blackburn
    08/09 - 6 goals for Blackburn

This is mainly due to injury he is known to have a serious knee injury which has been a problem since his Munich days

No doubt he is and has a natural talent but the injury seems to be a concern M.H. gave an interview not so lang ago that he would not buy second best or injury prone players however we have Bellamy and now R.S.C maybe on the way Im no expert otherwise it would be me in the managers seat do no about that when yu gamble with millions of £ you either win big or lose big a big gamble when if you lose its your job along with the millions

  17. I don't think the injury will be a problem, if it is, we won'tsign him. The MUEN says the medical will be more rigorous than usual. In the 2008/09 season he was Blackburns best player in the game at Eatlands and the bloke's got pedigree, playing for Bayern Munich before they got a bit rubbish. Keep the faith guys, Sparky knows what he's doing and it woldn't surprise me if a more high profile striker wason his way to Eastlands in the coing weeks to.
