Aston Villa 3 - 2 Man City - BAFFLED!

Well our little run of good results has ended, how that managed to happen is just a mystery to me.

I have no idea what happened today that meant we didn't leave Villa Park with three points, we played well, we created chances and Villa could not handle us.

The team were playing well and when we went ahead it was an overdue well deserved goal, then Villa out of nowhere equalised and stunned us, the goal shouldn't of stood due to an offside but that was just the first bit of luck Villa got.

We were back in front six minutes later and we were able to breathe a sigh of relief, surely we were going to go on and secure the game, it wasn't to be. Villa got their second piece of luck when the referee decided to award a free kick because Weimann decided to jump over Nastasic's leg, the poor refereeing was followed by a good free kick that managed to beat Joe Hart who was for some reason, stood behind his wall.

Surely we were not going to walk away with anything else but three points after totally dominating this game? Actually not only were we not going to take three points, we didn't even hold on for a draw. Villa's miraculous victory was complete when Guzan pumped a ball up field only for our defenders to get into a mess and let Weimann run on to it and toe poke it past the on rushing Joe Hart.

This was unbelievable today, how Villa managed to win is just crazy, saying that although it cant be denied that we gave Villa a footballing lesson, I am sure Villa fans would be quick to point out that we did make mistakes. Joe Hart's positioning was poor for the free kick and then obviously our defence totally made a mess to let Weimann through to score, ok so it was still remarkable that Villa won but if we had defended better in these two instances, maybe they wouldn't have.

We are five points off top spot now and while I am not overly worried on the back of this freak result today, we can't fall any further behind, we need to overhaul the deficit as soon as possible if we are to win the title.

A tiny set back today but lets not dwell on it because we have an exciting and a big game against Bayern Munich to look forward to on Wednesday.

    1. Agreed, but in my opinion I don't think we deserved to lose today.

    2. Citys second goal was lucky. Came off his back . Your first goal was offside . Player standing right in front of guzan . Can't think of a decent city chance to be honest . Villa let you have the ball and hit you with counter attacks.

  2. Tis True. After only a few years Citeh fans sound exactly the same as Teams like Manure, Chelski and the Arse when they lose to sides without the financial clout they have. Money has robbed you of your soul and respect to other teams

    1. It wasn't that I expect CIty to beat the sides without financial clout as you put it, we should have had this game sown up though and did not in my opinion deserve to lose.

  3. It sounds like Villa allowed you to play your pretty football for an hour or so before hitting you with a couple of goals that you couldn't recover from. Classic sucker punch / clever tactics

He's a keeper, you should be thankful that's where he was standing.

    1. Hahaha yeah, but you know what I mean his positioning was terrible.

  5. Should have, would have, could have, it means absolutely nothing I'm afraid.

You were beaten by a young, inexperienced Villa side, short of three of its most important and key players in the shape of Ashley Westwood, Gabby Agbonlahor, and Ashley Westwood, a young inexperienced Villa side that hung in there, stuck to the task, and in the end succeeded in scoring more goals than you guys could manage.

Good luck in your quest to reclaim the premier league title and to rule supreme in europe, but just remember that on the 28th of September you turned up at Villa Park and got rolled over.

    1. Correct it doesn't mean anything now, just to point out you didn't succeed in scoring 3 legitimate goals.

    2. The record books will record them as very legitimate, oh I do hope that in future games when u get the rub of the green that you remember ur comments today.
Well done to the depleted young villa team that dug in, repelled yr mega bucks superstars and turned u over. ;-)

  6. If it wasn't for results like this and the Baggies win, there would be no point in having a league like ours. Clubs who have to struggle financially have to work out ways to beat those that are ridiculously rich.
I suggest you accept the result, learn how to lose gracefully, and perhaps think about congratulating those that beat you. A bit like real life really.

    1. I will be honest I don't know how to accept defeat anymore, it was easier when we had a weaker team, this being good lark is hard work.

    2. Fair enough Gary. It was a bit like that when we won the European Cup. It all went pair shaped after that and it was bloody tough.

  7. That was the worst Villa side I've seen for many a year - and I'm pretty old! Negredo needs to play centre - no point having a tall player like Dzeko there when he mistimes over 50% of any high balls coming his way. For some reason it took till half time for Villa's manager to realise he needed to clamp down on the wide spaces which gave us free rein first half. Unfortunately the 'engineer' had fallen asleep at the engine wheel as he didn't really change our tactics other than thru subs.
I've had enough of Nasty for now, he needs dropping and a little time to gather himself. Lescott is probably pushing for a January move, but like Barry and Tevez, that would be a mistake.

  8. The game as whole needs to enter a new era / phase. It bores the life out of me to see money as one of the primary factors to success. Let's hope there is more of Villa beating the likes of Arsenal and Man City and WBA beating Man U. Hopefully it will return the league to some form of Normality where there are more than a couple of sides that could win the league.

  9. Think the subs made by pellegrini handed us the points. Nasri was having a field day - after he went off you never mounted another serious attack.

You had loads of possession - but didn't really look that threatening. I also think our striker Kozak ground your defenders down - he fought and challenged for every ball - in the end you stood off him.

You have much more to look forward to than us Aston Villa fans - and have players that can do things we can only dream of. However application is just as important.

    1. Some of Villa's players did a good job today and like you said applied themselves very well, I have never said they didn't. We did run the game though and am still baffled that we didn't win.

  10. You Manchester City guys need to be mighty thankful that Gabby Agbonlahor and Christian Benteke were missing from the Villa line up!!

  11. Really glad Villa fans have come to have their opinions, you are more than welcome to. I however don't accept bad language or just all out stupid replies.

I don't claim to be right with my opinion, so if you disagree then do just that with your own opinion.

I don't want bad language on here for my younger readers to see, cheers.

  12. Totally unbiased opinion coming up. Don't care about man city or villa or any other English team for that matter although got to admit your league is the best in the world by far and this season you probably have about a dozen world class teams in there compared to Spain and Italy where there is maybe 4 or 5.

Man City were unlucky. Should have won.

Paul Lambert has created a solid team much like in the way Martin O'Neill did with Leicester and Celtic (why Sunderland would replace him with a fascist mentalist is anyone's guess) and deserve credit for there honest style of football.

But the main take away from today's game for me is a reassertion of my belief that Joe Hart is not a Man City or an England class goalkeeper. I can't be bothered elaborating(although I could) on why this is the truth as to me it's obvious. I mean what was he doing at the free kick. Villa must have been laughing.

He's a handicap for city and England and until you find a replacement you'll be a poorer team for it.

My suggestion: your not blessed with great keepers in England but I think Ben Foster is your best.

    Ben Foster

    Just kidding

    Lev Yashin.

    1. I agree Joe Hart is being found out more and more, he had three goals to prevent and couldn't manage to stop one of them.

The free kick in particular was very poor on his part, his positioning was terrible and he invited the Villa player to bang it to his right and he obliged.

  13. I have now had chance to watch the game on SKY a couple of times. Man City were clearly the more threatening team with the most possession but that doesn't tell the whole story. Villa equalised with an offside goal but Man City had more than their fair share of fortune. Toure's goal bounced nicely to his feet, his shot was poor and it bounced kindly under Guzan who should have done better. Despite the offside Villa goal, Man City managed to regain the lead when the ball rolled down Dzeko's back when he was trying to get a clean head on it. Villa' second and third goal where both well taken and the free kick was exceptional. From what I can see, the majority of Man City's near misses came from wayward shots that had been deflected by Villa Defenders.

    Thoughts?

    1. Totally agree Toure had a bit of luck the way the ball went in but deserved luck in the sense that we were hammering them up until that point, he stuck his leg out and he scored.

Same for Dzeko maybe not the cleanest header but he beat the Villa defender to the ball and it went on target.

Villas luck was an offside goal and from a free kick that shouldn't of been given, totally at the other end of the luck spectrum.

City should of finished them off though when we had the chances to, that way luck doesn't play a part.

  14. It was a tough defeat to take. I'm not being disrespectful but I agree with this article in as much as it was completely mystifying as we completely outplayed a poor Villa. Having said that the Villa fans on here are also correct. We only have ourselves to blame for not putting the game to bed and making mistakes at the back and Villa definitely deserve credit for hanging in there and digging out an outrageous victory.

  15. Get rid of the black strip, or else the match was fixed. Villa were rubbish.

    1. Wouldn't say Villa were rubbish as such, they worked hard and have a lot of young players, it was a case of us just being a lot better yesterday.

Don't think the black strip has anything to do with it, refs wear them all the time and they are always spot on in their job role????

    1. Not generally they are not, Zabaleta is the best right back in the league and one of best in Europe in recent times, Kompany is the best centre half in Europe for me and Nastasic is a very good young player, not sure where your coming from there.

  17. Talking about luck, you were lucky that 2 players did not get red carded for challenges/actions that were not even given as free kicks. Luna has a hand shoved in his face and is pushed backwards, according to the laws of the game raising your hands and touching another player in any way is classed as violent conduct. The ref chose to ignore it and gave a throw in.
Kozak has an elbow in the head following and arieal challenge, by if I remember rightly your number 30. He made no attempt to play the ball just lead with the arm, again refs decision is a throw in to City while Kozak is left on the ground requiring treatment. All the time your centre halfs were pulling shirts and manhandling Kozak, and im not saying he was not doing the same however which way did the freekicks go?
As for the freekick, Weimann was taken out as he tried to go past, the ref played advantage which did not come and therefore correctly called it back, luck? No correct interpritation of the rules.

    1. Tried to go past, he jumped over his leg after passing the ball, you cant disguise that fact its there for all to see, not really sure about us being worthy of two sending offs either, regardless though your luck with decisions had goals attached, thanks for commenting.

  18. The truth is you did indeed batter us.
But it's goals that count and we scored more than you, simple.
Totally agree with the previous comment about our lack of width. Sadly, that's how we always play and I'd have thought Pellegrini would have had that sussed.

As for luck, yes we had our fair share, but we were unlucky against Chelsea which cost us a point.
    Swings and roundabouts.

I wouldn't worry about this defeat too much, you have tons of depth in your squad and will at least be thereabouts at the end of the season.
And, imo well above the red scum down the road

  21. That's the beauty and pain of football. Some days the game goes your way you have 2chances on goal, they go in, you win. Another day you can have all the chances in the world and yet no goals so you loose.

Thankfully city's defence wasn't up to scratch, didn't while ours held strong. You were the better team on the day but goals are what count otherwise we would have had 3 points against Chelsea and last season wouldn't have been as close at the end as it was.

Again just the beauty and pain of the game we love...
